Privacy Conscious Email Provider


              Privacy has become a main concern in today's online world and particularly in the most personal of area like our email account. Nowadays email privacy has become a board topic with topics dealing with different issues like unauthorized access and inspection of email, spying etc. This unauthorized access takes place when the mail is transmitted from one account to another or when it is in the mail server or when it is in user personal computer.

              Today we have different tools to protect our email from that access, tools like encryption have helped us to hide our data in different layers so that people without the decryption key cannot look into our information. Many email providers have come which provide secure and private services to protect our information.

Here we are going to discuss some of such email provider which have both Free and Paid services. And we will also discuss other precautions that should be taken while using email service.


1.Proton Mail



               Proton Mail is free, open-source and end-to-end encryption email service. It works on both PC and mobile devices(Android and iOS). And we talk about privacy encryption plays a crucial part in it, whether the messages are secure from the public eye or not. And when it came to Proton Mail it offers end-to-end encryption to users and when a message is encrypted nobody can decrypt the information – not even the provider, your ISP or the government. Proton Mail does not keep track of your IP address i.e there is no log which means no one can track based on your IP.
Some of the features mentioned on their site are:-
  • End-to-End encryption: messages are stored on the server in encrypted form. The messages are transmitted in the encrypted form from users to server and from the server to users.
  • Zero Access to User Data: Proton Mail’s Zero Access means the data are encrypted in such a way that it becomes inaccessible to them also. The messages are encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that only the user has access to.
  • Open Source Cryptography: it uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP. And all the cryptographic libraries are open source.

2. Tutanota Mail



                 Tutanota is another secure email service. It quite similar to Proton Mail in term of design and security. It has end-to-end encryption i.e its encrypted from the sender to the receiver and no one other than them has access to the data. It gives the option to enable and disable the private option in the mail. The web interface is simple and easy to use. It uses AES,RSA for email encryption. Tutanota is also an open-source project. It gives different suffix option such as @tutanota.de, @tutamail.com, @tuta.io with which you can create your email id.

3. Mailfence



              Mailfence is a private and a secure email service provider that offers OpenPGP based End-to-End encryption with a digital signature. It provides a complete email suite which includes Mailfence Calendar, Mailfence Document, Contacts, Instant Messaging and File sharing Functions. It gives the user full control over their key management with an integrate keystore.

Other Precautions which should be taken while using emails are:

  1. The most important do not open emails that you don't trust.
  2. Avoid sending sensitive data over the email without encryption.
  3. Never click links or open any emails from your spam folder.
  4. Use a spam filter.
  5. Use a antivirus software to scan the emails before opening.
  6. Always logout when you are using public wifi or when you are not using your personal PC.
  7. Change your password frequently.
  8. Never share your email with someone you don't trust or in any public forum.
  9. Always use 2FA (Two Factor Authentication) in your email account.
